What's the Deal with GMOs

I'm sure you've heard all the fuss about GMO labeling in the media. No? Me either. There are groups of people working towards removing GMOs from our world. You may be asking yourself...

What are GMO s?

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. Like mutants on X-men. The reason certain companies, which shall not be named, have resorted to genetic alteration of our food is to make the growing "easier". They add genes from a different plant that might boosts its immunity to herbicides. That way, when they spray their fields of crops, they won't die. Only the "weeds" die. (Why did I put quotes around the word weeds? Because I despise the stigma surrounding said word, but that's another post in itself.) Back to GMO s.

Why does it matter how my food is grown?

Food is our fuel. Would you put low grade fuel in your sports car that cost a fortune? No way! Same goes for our bodies. We only get one.

But all the Media says they are SAFE.

"... they portrayed the carious concerns as merely the ignorant opinions of misinformed individuals - and derided them as not only unscientific, but anti-science. They then set to work to convince the public and government officials, through the dissemination of false information, that there was an overwhelming expert consensus, based on solid evidence, that GMOs were safe." ~ Jane Goodall
I quoted all that to say- don't believe everything you see on the media. Do your own research. You're here doing just that and I applaud you. Now, for some scientific facts.

This study found that rats fed GM maize were more likely to contract liver problems and tumors.

Another study discovered that pigs fed GM feed tended to have enlarged uteri.
"The reported difference in uterine weight warrants further investigation... such a biologically significant difference in uterine weights may reflect endometrial hyperplasia or carcinoma..."

My conclusion

I'm going to keep learning and in the meantime, avoid as much interaction with genetically modified foods as I can.

Are you concerned with genetically modified crops?
