Toxic Chemicals- Formaldehyde

Easy KETO Meals, Balanced KETO Meal Plan

Formaldehyde
And Formaldehyde Producing Chemicals
Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasing products (FRPs) are found in everyday cosmetics such as: hair gel, shampoo, hair- smoothing products, body wash, and BABY soap. Yikes! It’s added to these products to prevent microbes from growing inside while they sit on the shelf.

Keep an Eye Out For:

If you find any of these on a product label, think twice before buying it. Long confusing chemical names include “quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, polyoxymethylene urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (bromopol) and glyoxal.” ~safecosmetics.org. Don’t forget formaldehyde itself.

What are formaldehyde releasing products?

Let’s just stick with FRPs. That long name is way too hard to say let alone remember. FRPs are chemicals known to release small amounts of formaldehyde over time. Small amounts don’t sound too bad until you take into account that even miniscule levels of the dreaded formaldehyde can cause serious health concerns.

Health Problems

Cancer

Studies have shown that there is a link between exposure to formaldehyde and leukemia. Not only that, but it also initiates the growth of tumors. The number of people affected by cancer is rising dramatically these days.

Allergies and Irritation

I didn’t know there was an award for the “Allergen of the Year”. There is just something wrong with that. In 2015 these chemicals were the star of the show and won this exact award. Formaldehyde and FRPs are known irritants. At high enough levels they can cause chemical burns, but even at low levels, like those in shampoos, can cause allergic skin reactions. Nearly 12% of the population is allergic to formaldehyde, and 22% are allergic to Quaternium-15- a FRP.

How to Avoid

Label Reading

Option 1 is a bit labor intensive and time consuming. Reading the labels of every beauty product you by and googling the chemical names isn’t fun. Trust me- you’ll end up just buying the one with the shortest ingredient list no matter what is on it. If this sounds like a fun way to shop, go ahead. More power to you.

Buy From a Reputable Company

I don’t have the time or patience to be a label reader all the time. I still read them, but now that I’ve found a company I can trust, I don’t have to. I can feel confident in my family’s health without spending a fortune or spending all my spare time worrying about chemical names.
